The story so far

The Global Cooling Project is now ready to go into an action phase, with initial implementation in West Africa, followed by Florida, India and Australia. Four separate teams will be conducting implementation, with a science/coordination team.

Work completed is mainly on the science (please see Global Cooling science summary.

Origin

The project coordinator and principal fundraiser is Ray Taylor. Ray was originally inspired by Michal Kravcik. He had already been working on CO2 emissions reductions for several years, but was concerned that dangerous warming was already starting to happen. Michal's insight was that carefully chosen parts of the planet gave us an opportunity for global cooling through land-atmosphere interactions.

This was tremendously exciting, if other scientists would support it, and Ray worked hard to establish that this was the case. (see Global Cooling Science pdf (7 MB)). It got better, when all the spin off benefits, especially for Africa, became apparent.

Funding

Funding will be used for:

  • Consultations with communities and governments in West Africa, with support of SEARNET, based at the World Agro-forestry Institute.
  • Selection of exact locations for biggest effect, by regional modelling.
  • Participative learning and action with local communities.
  • Designs of four 400km2 rainwater harvesting zones ("cloud coaxing zones").
  • Training of implementation teams and maintenance teams.
  • Setting up monitoring and evaluation, so we can prove it's worked!
  • Planning meetings eg for up-scaling and replication.
